Strengthening Aviation Security Every Day

Alt text

Safeguarding the skies has been one of our highest priorities since ALPA's founding in 1931. In today’s rapidly evolving airline industry, the ALPA Air Safety Organization—the largest nongovernmental organization of its kind—continues to drive security measures that protect pilots, passengers, and cargo.

Innovative Security Measures Safeguard Air Travel

Security has long been a priority in commercial aviation, and its importance only continues to grow. The tragic events of 9/11 led to sweeping security changes. Aviation security continues to evolve as the airline industry confronts growing challenges, such as unruly passengers and cybersecurity threats.

Airline pilots play a crucial role in maintaining aviation security. As the eyes and ears of the industry, pilots are uniquely positioned to spot suspicious activity and respond to threats. Their intimate knowledge of the aviation domain and their commitment to safety make pilots invaluable contributors to securing our skies.

Since 1931, we have been a driving force in improving aviation security. We've successfully led efforts across the industry, from the adoption of risk-based security protocols to expedited security screenings for airline crews. As new threats emerge, we will continue to push for security measures that keep pilots, passengers, and cargo secure, ensuring our skies remain safe from those who intend to do us harm.

While women have been in aviation for a long time, female pilots are still embarrassingly rare. Several times, I’ve had female passengers exclaim to me, “I didn’t know women could be pilots!”
