ALPA Statement on IATA Attempts to Raise the Pilot Retirement Age
WASHINGTON – The Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l (ALPA) issued the following statement today, pushing back against a proposal to raise the international age limit for commercial pilots from 65 to 67 after a global airline trade association announced plans to petition the U.N.'s aviation body, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), for the change.
"The United States is the global leader in aviation safety, and we should resist any attempts to arbitrarily make changes to the regulatory framework that has helped us achieve this record. That’s why Congress rejected making a change to the pilot retirement age just last year. The U.S. should continue to provide global leadership on this issue and maintain its current position.”
Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents more than 80,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit ALPA.org or follow us on Twitter @ALPAPilots.
