Unified WestJet Pilots Call on Management to Break Its Pattern of Bargaining Failures

Calgary, Alta.—On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the WestJet Master Executive Council (MEC) of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) announced to WestJet management its intention to open contract negotiations on the pilot group’s third collective agreement.

“Our pilot group leaders and Negotiating Committee have been preparing for months in anticipation of the first day of negotiations,” said Capt. Jacob Astin, WestJet MEC chair. “We are taking these upcoming negotiations seriously and expect WestJet management to do the same. We also expect them to have learned from their recent mistakes at the bargaining table.”

In 2024, WestJet management was unable to reach a timely agreement with their mechanics, ultimately causing significant operational disruption. Earlier this year, management again failed to reach an agreement that appropriately recognized the true value and contributions of their flight attendants, resulting in the flight attendants being forced onto the picket line to pursue a fair contract.

“During our negotiating process, we are committed to working with WestJet to bring stability to our workforce, stability to our airline, and stability to our valued customers,” continued Capt. Astin. “We strongly encourage WestJet management and it’s ownership group, Onex, to work with us to ensure WestJet becomes a well-respected carrier where pilots want to work and passengers choose to fly.”

“With contract talks now set to begin formally, it is time for WestJet management to recognize their pilots’ worth, value their experience, and provide long-term solutions regarding career growth, working conditions, and rules tied to scheduling and safety,” added Astin.
