Project Takeoff Helps Denver Students Earn Their Wings
Connecting Students with Aviation Careers
ALPA’s Project Takeoff returned to Denver International Airport (DEN) last week to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals. This event brought together approximately 500 students for an engaging day of career exploration, hands-on learning, and conversations with industry professionals. It was held in partnership with DEN’s Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation (CEEA) at their new, state-of-the-art facility.
Expanding beyond previous Project Takeoff programs, this year’s event featured more than 20 aviation industry exhibitors representing a wide range of career paths. Students interacted with airline pilots and other aviation professionals, explored educational and training opportunities, and learned firsthand about the many roles that keep the industry moving. Many students also experienced the thrill of flight and earned their wings by flying one of three flight simulators with guidance from ALPA pilots.
The program also included a fireside chat with Maria Meleandez, DEN’s chief of staff, and Capt. Claudia Zapata-Cardone (United Airlines), Latino Professionals in Aerospace president. The discussion provided students with valuable insight into aviation careers, the journey to the flight deck, and the importance of perseverance in pursuing professional goals.
Throughout the day, ALPA pilots shared their experiences and answered questions about training, lifestyle, and career opportunities. These personal, one-on-one conversations helped make the profession more relatable and attainable while inspiring students to see themselves in aviation.
ALPA’s DEN Project Takeoff team included Education Committee chair F/O Justin Dahan (FedEx Express) along with Capt. Stephen Rocha (Delta Air Lines), F/O Dan Peltzman (United Airlines), F/O Joe Boyd (Kalitta Air), F/O Josh Chao (Kalitta Air), F/O Jess Ledford (Frontier Airlines), Capt. Nathan Racine (United Airlines), F/O Luke Skiles (CommuteAir), and F/O Dillon Washburn (United Airlines).
