WestJet Pilots Build Unity While Looking to the Future

With the successful integration of Swoop and Sunwing into the WestJet Group, WestJet pilots now make up ALPA’s second-largest Canadian pilot group. While their unity has been tested with the recent merger of seniority lists, the pilots are focused on building a strong and cohesive pilot group.

The pilot group’s Master Executive Council (MEC) and local representatives continue to work under the mandate to push back on the company when required and to ensure readiness for upcoming contract negotiations.

The pilots have been fighting back against corporate cost-cutting measures that directly impact members and the flying public. The pilots have criticized WestJet’s cabin redesign, which features as little as a 28-inch seat pitch, arguing that it significantly compromises passenger comfort. The company has since reversed course on the redesign.

The pilots’ second collective agreement expires at the end of 2026, and MEC leaders, Negotiating Committee members, and other pilot volunteers have begun work to ensure they’re fully prepared to negotiate their third collective agreement. The MEC remains focused on building pilot solidarity to ensure that the group is unified in order to secure the contract they’ve earned.
