A Fair Contract Is on the Horizon
Flair Airlines, Canada’s only ultra-low-cost carrier, remains active and viable—despite persistent rumours of the carrier’s foundering—thanks to the hard work of its approximately 300 dedicated pilots.
The pilot group is essential to the airline’s success and is seeking an industry-standard contract that recognizes the group’s contributions. “Our pilots’ work ethic and sacrifices need to be addressed in our current negotiations with the company,” remarked F/O Aimee Wintle, the pilot group’s Master Executive Council (MEC) chair. “Without contractual gains, Flair will continue to struggle to retain pilots. We’re leveraging all available ALPA resources and are prepared, united, and determined to negotiate a fair contract.”
The pilot group has taken important steps toward building a robust team by adding Capt. Rod Coffin as the MEC vice chair, who brings a different generational perspective to the MEC. The group has also launched informative podcasts and held virtual town hall meetings to provide timely responses to pilots’ questions and concerns.
The comprehensive contract negotiations under way have shown renewed momentum as negotiations resumed in January. The pilots remain cautiously optimistic that a fair contract, which will help secure Flair’s future, is on the horizon.
