Air Transport International Negotiations Hit Turbulence
In August 2025, after more than five years of negotiations, Air Transport International (ATI) pilots reached an agreement in principle with the company. But shortly afterward, management informed the pilots that the tentative deal had been rejected by either Air Transport Services Group, Inc. (ATSG) and/or Stonepeak. The airline is owned by ATSG, which was purchased in 2024 by alternative investment firm Stonepeak.
“Reaching a deal with management should have been the culmination of over five years of negotiations. Interference by our parent company, ATSG, in these negotiations is a clear indication that ATI/ATSG haven’t bargained in good faith,” said Capt. Josh Hoy, the pilot group’s Contract Negotiating Committee chair.
“Obviously, this was a deal breaker,” remarked Capt. Michael Sterling, ATI ALPA Master Executive Council (MEC) chair. “By walking back on the agreement we reached, management sent a very clear message: ATI and its parent corporation aren’t serious about honoring the commitments they made to our pilot group. These actions only confirmed what we’d long suspected—that we weren’t truly bargaining with the people who are in control. We’re working with the National Mediation Board [NMB] to restore the economics of the deal or declare an impasse.”
Throughout the remainder of 2025, the Contract Negotiating Committee continued meeting with the NMB and the company to finalize the agreement’s language. To date, the committee hasn’t received an updated financial proposal from the company and has only been told that management is unwilling to restore the economics of the agreement in principle.
In late December, the pilot group conducted a virtual picket, putting ATSG leaders on notice that the pilots are unified and won’t settle for less than a fair agreement.
Meetings with the NMB are continuing in 2026. The pilots would legally be able to strike once released by the board and after completing the 30-day cooling-off period required by the Railway Labor Act.
ATI is the largest Amazon carrier in the world. Every day, Amazon customers rely on the hard work of ATI pilots.
