Leadership and Advanced Safety Training (LAST)
This 3.5-day course provides hands-on, scenario-based training for Central Air Safety representatives. It covers SMS participation, hazard identification, risk management, and collaboration with management and regulators. The course also reviews voluntary safety programs and differences between U.S. and Canadian applications.
LAST is conducted over a three- and one-half-day period. It is a comprehensive, integrated, and scenario-based training experience that will equip Central Air Safety representatives to successfully participate in their airline’s safety management system (SMS). The targeted audience includes current and future Central Air Safety Committee Chairs, Event Review Committee (ERC) members, FOQA gatekeepers, fatigue representatives, and other associated personnel from both U.S and Canadian airlines.
Attendees will be provided with the functional knowledge and ability to work with management and regulators in the areas of hazard identification, risk management, and risk mitigation using best practices. Thorough review will be given to all voluntary safety programs along with any differences that may be seen between U.S and Canadian application.
Incorporated throughout the course are principals of organizational and safety leadership. Central Air Safety pilot volunteers serving in positions of leadership both at the MEC and LEC need a foundation from which to communicate their vision to the members of their committee, the MEC/LEC, and their pilots. This includes an understanding of safety issues as well as the administrative and management skills with which to lead a group efficiently and effectively. Media training will be offered to add the skills of clarity and poise when communicating.
A representative who has completed the LAST course will gain the multifaceted skills necessary to work within their airline to identify hazards and their potential to cause aircraft incidents and accidents. In addition, participants will be able to formulate a vision for safety and effectively communicate that vision to their committee, MEC, pilot group, and management.
Guests from the aviation safety industry will participate as well, allowing attendees an opportunity to discuss current issues and obtain a comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of challenges and opportunities as they move forward in their work.
The mission of the Leadership and Advanced Safety Training (LAST) course is to enhance experienced air safety representatives’ knowledge of the protocols regarding voluntary safety programs and administration of an MEC’s safety committee. It equips ALPA safety volunteers with the skills necessary to effectively address aviation hazards utilizing a Safety Management System (SMS) approach, including Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA), and other data sources. Participants will be ready to assume leadership positions within their safety structure, with the aim of effectively identifying, addressing, and mitigating safety hazards.
