Despite unseasonably cold weather, heavy rain, and strong winds, the annual Girls Can Fly event on May 23 at the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre saw an impressive turnout and high energy from attendees determined to take part. As an event sponsor, ALPA was proud to help inspire the next generation of pilots. Young girls showed remarkable curiosity and enthusiasm—many seeing, perhaps for the first time, that a career in aviation was within their reach.
ALPA’s booth was a hub of activity with steady lineups throughout the day. Attendees were eager to ask about the pilot profession and try their hand at the flight simulator.
F/O Elly Mansourian (Air Canada) led a team of ALPA Education Committee volunteers, including Capt. Shannon Chisholm (Air Canada), Capt. David Darby (Air Canada), F/O Mohona Hussain (Air Canada), Capt. Stacey Jackson (WestJet), F/O Heather Jennings (Air Canada), and Capt. Richard Lamere (Air Canada). Together, they delivered an engaging and welcoming experience for visitors of all ages.
The most rewarding moments for ALPA’s volunteer team came from watching aspiring aviators light up as they met pilots in uniform and imagined themselves in the flight deck one day.

ALPA members looking for more information or to get involved in the Education Committee’s efforts to promote the piloting profession, mentor aspiring aviators, and prepare future generations of pilots to join the ranks of our members should visit the Education Committee page or contact Education@alpa.org.
Anyone with a passion for aviation and the desire to fly can pursue a career as an airline pilot.
